GEOGRAPHICAL GROUP CONVENOR'S REPORT 2010
MEMBERSHIP:
The South Thames region includes South London, Surrey, Kent and Sussex and there are three training courses: Surrey, Salomon's and the Institute of Psychiatry in our area. At present, we have over 130 PSIGE members from a variety of professions, including psychotherapists, counselling psychologists and neuro-psychologists as well as clinical psychologists. With the restructuring of the BPS it is possible that the PSIGE structures will also change and may affect where our members come from and possibly the numbers.
The Committee consists of the following people: Jo King, Convenor (previously Co-convenor with Tamsin Fryer who is currently still on maternity leave), Reinhard Guss (Treasurer), Jacqui Bryant (new member), Tina Lee and Margaret O'Shaughnessy (new member). There are three co-opted members who liaise between the committee and their Trusts but do not attend committee meetings: Meg Rolleston, Adrienne Little, Jeni Brooks. Tracey Lintern, who was previously on the committee in Tina Lee's place while she was on maternity leave, is about to go on maternity leave herself, but until she does, will still be involved with the newsletter.
The committee meets five times a year to discuss any issues pertinent to psychology services for older people which have arisen from various professional routes, such as National PSIGE, the DCP and clinical practice. These meetings are also used to plan CPD events, for which we consult closely with our members on venues, presenters and topics. The committee members are very committed and travel far distances to attend the committee meetings.
EVENTS:
During the past year (February 2009 to February 2010) South Thames PSIGE organised the following training events:
- February 2009 – "From Psychological Interventions to a Psychology of Dementia: a Forty Year History to Reflect On". Facilitated by Professor Graham Stokes, Consultant Clinical Psychologist, London.
- June 2009 – "We will remember: Trauma, age and effective interventions". Facilitated by Dr Philip Dodgson, Consultant Clinical Psychologist, Brighton.
- September 2009 – "Research in Services for Older People" & "Competencies Framework for Psychological Therapists". This event unfortunately had to be cancelled as not enough people were able to attend.
- November 2009 – "Narrative Therapy: an Introductory Workshop with a Focus on Working with Older People". Facilitated by Diane Clare, Chartered Clinical Psychologist, Dartford.
South Thames PSIGE and Salomon's again ran a post qualification course on Clinical Neuro-psychology with Older People between January and March 2009. This course was fully subscribed and well received by attendees from all over the country.
FORTHCOMING EVENTS:
In 2010 we will be organising the usual four training events, including the February event ("Emotional Mapping and Old-Age Serivices: Developing Strategies for Professional Self-Care" facilitated by Rachel Davenhill) which will incorporate the AGM; a day focused on research and training at Salomons in September; and two further events in May/ June and November.
NEWSLETTER:
SThames PSIGE has been asked to host the July 2010 PSIGE Newsletter. We have sent out an appeal to members to submit articles for publications. The first few articles have been received while others are in preparation. Jo and Tracey are going to be acting as host-editors with Louisa Shirley, the editor.
Other priorities over the past year have been to make the website more useful and informative for our members (suggestions always welcome) and to attract more people to join the committee.
