Annual Report :: PSIGE North West – 2006/07

Geography

The North West Region is a wide area, and encompasses the following NHS Trusts:
Bolton, Salford and Trafford Mental Health Trust, Cheshire and Wirral Partnership Trust, Five Boroughs Partnership Trust, Lancashire Care Trust, Manchester Mental Health and Social Care Trust, Merseycare Trust, Pennine Care Trust and Trafford Healthcare Trust.

Local Clinical Psychology Training Courses

There are three Training Courses in the region based at the Universities of Lancaster, Liverpool and Manchester. Each course has approximately 63 trainees each (21 for each year). The course teams work in close collaboration with each other. Supervisors though out the region, take trainees from any of the three courses. NW PSIGE has a good working relationship with the different courses, and has collaborated with the research tutors in finding suitable research for trainees, as well as exploring the differing styles of small scale research projects required across the course.
Supervisors provide one or two and occasionally three core older adult placements.

Membership

There are 46 permanent members in our group, who are either qualified Clinical Psychologists, Trainees or Assistant Psychologists. Trainees are encouraged to attend PSIGE meetings whilst on placement, and Assistants when they are working with PSIGE members. Representatives from each of the courses, attend regularly and more recently the research tutors from the courses have also attended.

Meetings

We meet every 2 months at a central venue, for about 2 - 3 hours. The venues are spread across the region. Alternate meetings tend to comprise of a business component followed by a presentation. Meetings continue to be regularly attended, however finding venues that have parking available, for little or no charge are becoming increasingly difficult to find. The full day workshop venue had to be funded, and we will need to consider costs for future venues.

Posts and workforce planning

At each meeting representatives from the different NHS Trusts provide an update on workforce planning issues, including whether new posts have been established, or old ones upgraded. Recently there has been some disquiet on the shortages of new posts, and we are seeing increasing numbers of trainees, looking for work as early as possible in the 3rd year.

CPD

In last year the following CPD days were held :
Everybody's business
Outcomes - presented by representative from CSIP.
An email system is also well established and information from National PSIGE and from members is regularly sent out to all NW PSIGE members. Members have been kept up to date with the details concerning the Mental Capacity Act.

Planning for next year

A questionnaire has been sent to all NW PSIGE members for a survey of their CPD needs and transport preferences. The topics of Life Story Work, working in teams, systemic approaches and neuro-psychological assessment have all been highlighted as topics that members would like for CPD events. Preparations are underway for a full day workshop in November on systemic approaches. It is envisaged that a further 2 half day workshop events, one on Life Story Work and one on Neuro-psychological assessment may be arranged for later in the year.
