Welcome to PSIGE

PSIGE provides a forum for Psychologists with an interest in work with older people.

Established in 1980, PSIGE is the Faculty for Old Age Psychology (British Psychological Society, Division of Clinical Psychology). It works to encourage the exchange of information, ideas and expertise about psychological approaches with older people.

It is a national group with members throughout the UK. Although primarily for Psychologists, membership is open to individuals from other disciplines and voluntary groups who share an interest in work with older people.

Thanks to all those who attended the PSIGE National Conference 2011 in Glasgow and helped make it such a success! We hope you found it a stimulating and informative event.

The PSIGE National Conference 2012 will be hosted by the South West Geographical Group. While details are still to be confirmed, the likelihood is it will take place in Bristol in June 2012. Please watch this space for details as they emerge.

PSIGE Special Edition Newsletter: IAPT and Older People

We are delighted to make available as a pdf this special edition of the PSIGE Newsletter draws together 16 articles which provide a variety of perspectives on this topical issue. The Newsletter is a culmination of the last 12 months of national events gathering the best practice in the country. IAPT is one of two strategic streams of work PSIGE will be taking further this year under the leadership of Julia Boot and Louise Bergin. Although IAPT is a formal programme in England, the relevance of the improving access agenda to the other nations hopefully makes this publication a resource with broad appeal and utility. Please feel free to distribute it widely.

We are planning a further training day on IAPT issues in the West Midlands in September 2011.

Please contact Julia Boot or Louise Bergin if you would like to contribute a presentation to this event.

PSIGE National Committee

Organisation and Activity

British Psychological Society PSIGE is organised into 16 geographical groups. A national committee is elected annually at the AGM and links with these groups through the Geographical Groups Convenor.

The committee works on behalf of PSIGE members and functions as a consultative body to the BPS and DCP on relevant issues relating to older people.

Time limited task working groups including co-opted members are co-ordinated through the Committee to address specific issues e.g. Quality Assurance, Elder Abuse, Clinical Psychology Training and Primary Care. Bibliographies on a wide range of topics (e.g. sexuality in older adults, neuropsychology, and ageing and reminiscence) have also been compiled and are available at a cost.

The Committee also liases with other agencies and professional groups.
